I am proud to say both my cars, the Veloster and the NA Miata have perfectly aligned seat and wheel placement. But it is very likely your car may not!
If you have a BMW or Mercedes or Audi/VW, it is likely your wheel is offset towards the center of the car. Some of you might say, “hey this ain’t a big deal!” But oh yeah it is a big deal. Do you, for any reason, have a longer left arm and/or sit on the right side of your seat? NO! Then why accept a car that has this defect? There is no excuse for this. Check your cars right now for this cancer, and if your car has it, throw it away.

this is somethign I noticed, and attempted to correct, when putting in aftermarket seats. hey... lining these up with teh wheel is hard, WAIT a minute, the factory seats don’t line up either!

I think my 4Runner is a solid 2 inches to the right of the middle of the seat.

Wow, this would drive me bonkers. My 2002 Miata & ‘88 323 GTX have good, properly aligned seats.

Yeah there is no excuse for that. That is going to ruin your posture if you go for long drives, not to mention different parts of your chest and arms will be developed from all that corner carving exercise.

Corner carving exercise? You mean trying to hang on because of the several miles of body roll.

Mine don’t line up. *eye twitches*

Make sure brother. Break out that tape.

Well yeah but the clutch in an NA is basically under the wheel.

I knew about the VW and GM, but not with the Toyota.

One hand on the wheel, one out the window. No matter how much they tell you to keep both hands on the wheel, they know it feels better hanging out the window and tailor the wheel position to feel more natural that way. At least that’s my theory.
On the last pic, though, I think the camera angle is exaggerating the offset. It’s definitely there, but I never notced it that much when I sat in one.

Not really, I think the NA pedal positioning was well thought out from the beginning. The clutch pedal is well aligned and the brake pedal is almost directly center.

I heard once upon a time that this was an issue with a lot of transverse cars — maybe trying to squeeze the steering gears through the firewall without getting in the way? My longitudinal VW is dead center.

The funny thing is RWD cars have this issue just as much. What VW do you have?

Weird...I sincerely hope this isn’t a simple engineering screwup. I’ve got a B5 Passat (native AWD platform from Audi).

Wasn’t the case in RHD, I know from experience.

Its obviously a feature...so you can better drive with your knees...on top of the right one for bracing while the left maneuvers for turning....frees up your hands for eating or texting. Its obvious.

That truck wouldn’t be a problem if they were still available with front bench seats :)

But no, they need their huge center consoles to fit two Double Gulps and a handgun.

Surely this is to shorten the distance to reach the manual shifter
“BMW or Mercedes or Audi/VW”
Oh... wait...

I think its a result of the customer behavior known as “trucker lean” or in other areas “Minority youth recline non-symmetry” specifically this is evidenced when the moron in front of you has their head not in alignment with the head rest while their left (if in LHD) arm on the top of the wheel while the right arm fondles the gear-selector in their non-clutch equipped car.

First gen Volvo S40 is centered. Though I have a bad tendency to sit at an angle anyways due to how I rest my left foot (automatic).

Viper is the worst for this.

I got a 2016 Odyssey for a loaner today, and no, the seat does not line up with the gauges. The steering wheel cuts off the top right of the speedo. In a $36,000 vehicle, with as big as it is, you’d think they’d get that right. TBH, there are a lot of build quality issues with this vehicle, and I’ll be glad to get my ‘03 Odyssey back from the shop.

Quite often the pedals are offset also.

Apparently you have never observed your fellow drivers on the road. Look how many people sit almost in the center of their car, generally with left arm on top of the steering wheel... or if your too busy driving just check out Matthew McConaughey in any Lincoln commercial.

I am fairly sure my GTO is this way.

The centre console also has room to spare for a not yet invented footgun.

The MJ isn’t bad. It’s not noticeable at least.
The Niva on the other hand has that issue. Except the seats have so little side bolstering that you don’t notice... Until you lean back into the moulded head rest and your neck goes all critchy because the centre of the concavity is off to your left somewhere...

GM used to be pretty well known for this, glad to see the tradition is still alive in the Silverado.
It was particularly noticeable in the 4th gen Nova, since it used the front subframe from the Camaro bolted on to the 3rd gen’s body shell and the two just didn’t line up quite right.
